Senior ELA Curriculum Writer

CommonLit is a nonprofit edtech startup organization dedicated to closing the literacy gap for America's students. We develop open educational resources, flexible curriculum materials, and integrated technology tools that we make freely available to all teachers and students at to promote high-quality reading and writing instruction. We are looking for a former English Language Arts teacher with masterful curriculum development skills and creative problem solving skills to join our collaborative and fast-paced team. The ideal candidate would be excited about working for an edtech startup, willing to take on multiple roles, and committed to closing the achievement gap for low-income students. START DATE: Summer 2019

  • Responsibilities:
    • Plan, write, and review high-quality curriculum for grades 6-10
    • Use expertise and creativity to invent new approaches to curriculum design
    • Implement test-driven design approaches 
    • Provide direct feedback to colleagues to improve quality of tools with end-user in mind
    • Choose rigorous and high-quality texts for curriculum
    • Work collaboratively to meet curriculum development deadlines
    • Manage and organize new projects 
    • Implement feedback to continuously improve the quality of curricular products
    • Manage workflow and multiple priorities with creativity and a solutions-oriented mindset
  • Qualifications:
    • 5+ years of teaching and/or other curriculum writing experience
    • Bachelor's degree in English, history, or other humanities field required
    • Strong writing, editing, and analytical skills required
    • Strong attention to detail required
    • In-depth knowledge of the ELA Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
    • Familiarity with trends and best practices in literacy instruction
    • Ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional teams
    • Deep understanding of the challenges facing teachers and students 
    • Familiarity with challenges of rolling out curriculum and technology across a school or district 
    • Creative problem-solver with openness to fill multiple roles in a startup environment
    • Preference for candidates with experience working in low-income schools and/or with multicultural populations

    We will not consider applications for remote work for this role. Please only apply if you are able to live and work in the Washington, D.C. region. We may be willing to provide a stipend for candidates who are relocating.
