Special Projects Associate

CommonLit is a nonprofit edtech organization dedicated to closing the literacy gap for elementary, middle, and high school students. The organization operates a popular free online reading program used by 22 million teachers and students in over 75,000 schools across the United States and Latin America.


We are looking for a Special Projects Associate who is excited to work for a fast-paced tech startup. The ideal candidate would be willing to work across several departments (communications, operations, and fundraising), and is committed to CommonLit’s mission of preparing all students to succeed in the 21st century. Responsibilities may include managing and/or participating in projects that involve fundraising, data entry, copyediting, managing strategic communications initiatives, and conducting time-sensitive research. We are looking for a candidate with excellent research and writing skills, attention to detail, and a hunger to learn new skills. This is an entry-level position in a fast-growing organization that offers many opportunities for growth and advancement in a number of different departments. 

  • Responsibilities:
    • Participate in or lead multiple projects simultaneously, collaborating across departments
    • Complete research tasks to support strategic projects 
    • Organize documents to support execution of the fundraising strategy
    • Collect data to support grant reporting
    • Create materials (decks, reports, emails, etc.) to support donor solicitations and meetings
    • Coordinate fundraising meetings, events and activities
    • Track, coordinate, and write fundraising communications and PR
    • Support in writing and preparing compelling LOIs, grant proposals, and grant reports
    • Conduct research to identify new funding sources and track the fundraising pipeline
    • Assist with other daily needs of a fast-growing, distributed organization
  • Qualifications:
    • A Bachelor’s degree
    • 0-2 years of relevant work experience
    • Experience in research, writing, and copyediting
    • A special skill in one or more of the following areas: sales, marketing, fundraising, graphic design, video editing, or data analysis
    • Experience working with communities of color 
    • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to work flexibly 
    • Strategic thinker, self-starter, with strong time management skills
    • Strong attention to detail and desire for feedback
  • Location: Washington D.C. or remote location
  • Pay: $55,000 - $65,000 commensurate with experience. Health, Dental, and Vision insurance, 401k and retirement services, free telehealth services, pre-tax commuter benefits, small necessities leave, and paid time off.
