Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "America" by Claude McKay.

Festus Claudius “Claude” McKay (1889-1948) was a Jamaican-American novelist and poet who played an important role in the Harlem Renaissance. In this sonnet, the speaker reveals his mixed feelings about living in "the land of the free."

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of America and Prejudice & Discrimination as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"What are the effects of prejudice?" and "What makes America unique?"
