by General Assembly of the United Nations 1948

Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" by General Assembly of the United Nations.

The "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" was adopted by the United Nations, legally defining the crime of genocide and defining the terms of its prevention and punishment for nations who chose to sign.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Social Change & Revolution and War & Peace as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"How do people create change?" and "How can we achieve peace?"

Ways to support your child:

  • Ask your child about this historical document at home:
    • What was "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" about?
    • What did you learn about Social Change & Revolution?
    • What did you learn about War & Peace?
  • Watch Eyewitness Testimony: Raphael Lemkin at home with your child.
