Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "How Haiti Saved the United States" by David White.

In the late 18th century, Toussaint L'Ouverture, a former Haitian slave, led a slave uprising that conquered the Haitians' French captors and helped America expand. This article explains how this remarkable event created lasting change not only in Haiti, but in other countries as well.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of America and Social Change & Revolution as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"How has America changed over time?" and "How do people create change?"
