This week in class, we’re reading "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman.

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was a famous American poet, essayist, and humanist who is often called the father of the "free verse" style of poetry. He wrote during the urbanization of America and celebrated the idea of America alive with nature, art, and imagination. In this poem, Whitman describes the varied, lively voices across America.

As we read, we will be discussing the theme of America as it relates to the text. We are trying to answer this big question :

"How has America changed over time?"

Ways to support your child:

  • Ask your child about this poem at home:
    • What was "I Hear America Singing" about?
    • What did you learn about America?
  • Watch Mini Bio: Walt Whitman at home with your child.
