Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "I'm Happiest When Most Away" by Emily Brontë.

Emily Jane Brontë (1818-1848) was an English writer who is best known for her novel, Wuthering Heights. In this short poem, Brontë contemplates existing in a solitary, meditative state.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Beauty & Happiness, Death, and Loneliness & Isolation as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"How do people face death?", "What does it mean to feel alone?", and "How can we achieve happiness?"

Ways to support your child:

  • Ask your child about this poem at home:
    • What was "I'm Happiest When Most Away" about?
    • What did you learn about Beauty & Happiness?
    • What did you learn about Death?
    • What did you learn about Loneliness & Isolation?
  • Watch Brontë Country: The Story of Emily, Charlotte & Anne Brontë at home with your child.
