Parent guide: The Milgram Experiment

by Saul McLeod

Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "The Milgram Experiment" by Saul McLeod .

In 1963, Stanley Milgram conducted a study on obedience. Milgram was hoping to examine the psychology behind the Nazis' obedience to authority -- were they bad people at heart, or just ordinary people coerced into committing horrible acts? Using a series of social psychology experiments, Milgram measured the eagerness of participants to comply with an authority figure. The study's findings were shocking.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Morality and Power & Greed as they relate to the text.. We are trying to answer these big questions:

"Why do people do bad things?" and "How does power corrupt?"
