In Shel Silverstein's poem "Underface," a speaker describes the face they show to the world and the one that hides underneath.

Pair “Underface” with “The Swallow and the Pumpkinseed” and have students discuss Nol Bu and Heung Bu’s personalities. Do students think that Nol Bu and Heung Bu have an underface that they hide from others? Why or why not? Ask students to discuss whether or not they have an underface. How would they describe their underface?

The Story of The Lazy Boy: A Kachari Folktale

In the early 1900s, a Christian missionary named Reverend Sidney Endle authored a book about the Kachari, an ethnic group indigenous to the Assam region of India. His book includes written translations of several folktales, including "The Story of the Lazy Boy," in which a boy misses his opportunity to plant during planting season.

Pair “The Story of the Lazy Boy: A Kachari Folktale” with “The Swallow and the Pumpkinseed” and have students compare and contrast the Lazy Boy with Nol Bu and Heung Bu. Do students think the Lazy Boy is more like Nol Bu or Heung Bu? How do the lessons learned in both stories compare?
