This week in class, we’re reading "To His Excellency, General Washington" by Phillis Wheatley.
Written by Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784), a former slave and the first published African-American female poet in U.S. history, it is an ode to the future first president, commending his achievements as general in the American Revolutionary War.
As we read, we will be discussing the theme of America as it relates to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :
"How has America changed over time?" and "What makes America unique?"
Ways to support your child:
Ask your child about this poem at home:
- What was "To His Excellency, General Washington" About
- What did you learn about?
- Watch George Washington nominated as the Commander of the Continental Army at home with your child.
