Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "Liberating the First Nazi Camp" by Veterans History Project.

In "Liberating the First Nazi Camp: Interview with Jim Martin," WWII veteran Jim Martin describes his experience finding a concentration camp in Ohrdruf, Germany, the first Nazi camp liberated by U.S. forces.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Comedy & Tragedy and War & Peace as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"What can we learn from tragedy?" and "How are we changed by war?"

Ways to support your child:

  • Ask your child about this interview at home:
    • What was "Liberating the First Nazi Camp" about?
    • What did you learn about Comedy & Tragedy?
    • What did you learn about War & Peace?
  • Watch WWII veteran recalls liberation of Buchenwald at home with your child.
