Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.

This week in class, we’re reading "The 1897 Petition Against the Annexation of Hawaii" by National Archives.

In "The 1897 Petition Against the Annexation of Hawaii," the events that led up to the United States' annexation of the Hawaiian Islands is discussed, as well as native Hawaiians' attempts to maintain their independence.

As we read, we will be discussing the themes of America, Justice, Freedom & Equality, and Power & Greed as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :

"How has America changed over time?", "What is fair?", and "How does power corrupt?"
