It's Time to Celebrate Hanukkah

Carol Gordon Ekster 2021 4th Grade

Tonight is the night

to make potato pancakes!

Wash. Cut. Grate.

Squish the mix between

our fingers.

Pat, pat! Round and flat.

That’s the touch of

Hanukkah!

Tonight is the night

to simmer the oil.

Splatter! Sizzle!

Smoky onions on

the griddle.

Mmm mmm…

That’s the smell

of Hanukkah.

Tonight is the night

to eat fried treats.

Dunk a doughnut.

Dip a latke into

applesauce and sour cream.

Yum, yum!

That’s the taste of

Hanukkah.

Tonight is the night

to light the menorah.

Start with the

Shamash.

On all eight nights,

candles glimmer

and glow.

That’s the sight

of Hanukkah.

Tonight is the night

to sing, while candles burn

low, the same music shared

long ago.

To tell of brave deeds

of the Maccabees, and how

this miracle came to be.

That’s the sound of

Hanukkah.

Tonight is the night

to give and get gifts.

New dreidels to spin

and twirl.

Chocolate gelt, wrapped

in gold. Thank-you hugs,

wrapped in love.

It’s time to celebrate

Hanukkah!
