Parent Guide > Athenian Democracy
Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.
This week in class, we’re reading "Athenian Democracy" by Mark Cartwright.
This text explains how Athens created and organized one of the world's first recorded democracies. Athenian democracy, especially given its systems of checks and balances and citizen participation, has been highly influential to many modern democracies.
As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Justice, Freedom & Equality, Power & Greed, Social Change & Revolution, and War & Peace as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :
"What is fair?", "How do people create change?", "How does power corrupt?", and "How can we achieve peace?"
