Parent Guide > Growing Up with Juneteenth
Welcome to the parent guide for this text! Read below to find out about what your child is reading in class and how you can support him/her at home.
This week in class, we’re reading "Growing Up with Juneteenth" by Annette Gordon-Reed.
In "Growing Up with Juneteenth," the author describes what it was like growing up in Texas and celebrating a holiday that recognizes the end of slavery.
As we read, we will be discussing the themes of Community, Justice, Freedom & Equality, and Prejudice & Discrimination as they relate to the text. We are trying to answer these big questions :
"What is the importance of community?", "Which is more important: freedom or security?", and "What are the effects of prejudice?"
